Spring is finally here! As the days get longer and the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to enjoy outdoor adventures with your furry friends. At Happy Paws Pet Nanny, we love seeing pets soaking up the sunshine and going on extra sniffy walks this time of year. But spring also brings a few things to watch out for when it comes to your pet’s safety and health.
From pesky pests to seasonal allergies, knowing what to expect (and how to prevent problems) will help you and your pet enjoy everything spring has to offer. In this post, we’re sharing important springtime safety tips to keep your dogs, cats, and other furry family members safe and happy all season long.
Common Seasonal Hazards to Look Out For
Toxic Plants Are Blooming:
Springtime is beautiful, but not every plant in your garden or neighborhood is safe for pets. Some common spring flowers and plants are toxic to dogs and cats. Popular flowers like lilies, tulips, daffodils, and azaleas can be dangerous if your pet chews on them. Even small amounts can cause upset stomachs, drooling, or worse.
If you’re planting a garden or walking through the neighborhood, make sure to steer clear of these toxic blooms. Keep an eye on your pup during walks, and avoid letting them chew on plants or dig in gardens. At home, double-check that any houseplants or flowers you bring inside are pet-friendly.
Pesky Pests Return:
As the weather warms up, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes come out to play–and they’re looking for a host. These pests can cause more than just itchy bites. Fleas can lead to skin irritation and allergies, while ticks carry diseases like Lyme disease. Mosquitoes can transmit heartworm, which is dangerous and difficult to treat in pets.
Make sure your pet is up-to-date on their flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Talk to your veterinarian about the best protection for your furry friend. After walks or playtime in tall grass or wooded areas, check your pet thoroughly for any unwanted hitchhikers.
Spring Allergies Affect Pets Too:
Humans aren’t the only ones who deal with spring allergies. Pets can also suffer from pollen, grass, and dust allergies. If your dog or cat is scratching more than usual, licking their paws, or has watery eyes, allergies could be the cause. Some pets may also sneeze or have skin irritation during allergy season.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s a good idea to talk with your vet. They can recommend treatments to help ease your pet’s symptoms, whether that’s a special shampoo, allergy meds, or dietary changes.
Preparing for Warmer Weather
Hydration is Key:
As temperatures rise, your pet will need plenty of water, especially during walks and playtime. Make sure your pet always has fresh, clean water at home and bring some along for outings. Dogs can overheat quickly, even in mild spring weather, so take breaks in the shade and avoid outdoor play during the hottest parts of the day.
Protect Those Paws:
While spring weather feels great, sidewalks and pavement can heat up fast in the sun. Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws. Before heading out for a walk, check the pavement with your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. Stick to grassy areas when possible or walk during cooler times of day, like early mornings or evenings.
Spring Cleaning Safety:
Many people dive into spring cleaning this time of year, but be careful with the products you use around your pets. Household cleaners, pesticides, and fertilizers often contain chemicals that are toxic to pets. Keep pets out of freshly cleaned areas until everything is dry, and store cleaning products securely out of reach.
If you’re using fertilizer in your garden, make sure it’s pet-safe. Some fertilizers and pesticides can be harmful if licked off paws or ingested.
